OUR PLATFORM

The Chaffin Ruhe ticket is committed to addressing real issues facing real students. We have an experienced vision of an organization that does more than plan events and provide free food, because as much as we love both, there are still very real problems that students must wrestle with each and every day.

The platforms that follow were formed by listening to student concerns and taking an honest look at our own experiences as students living in the halls. Everything we’ve laid out for you here is realistic and achievable within the course of the 2015-16 academic year.

Give us your vote, and we’ll INVEST, ENGAGE, ADVOCATE and REFINE.

INVEST

Growing tomorrow's student leaders

  1. Partner with Truman’s Closet to Encourage Professional Development of Freshmen

    1. Utilize the educational components of this MSA auxiliary by presenting them to representatives early each fall semester.

    2. Help students become more comfortable with the service and reduce stigma around renting professional attire by organizing a tour of the Closet, what it offers and how it works.

  2. Introduce a Comprehensive Mentorship Program for Representatives

    1. All cabinet members will be randomly assigned representatives to mentor

    2. Mentors must complete a series of tasks each semester:

      1. Make initial contact with representatives and begin building working relationships

      2. Attend a minimum of two events on campus with mentees per semester, with no more than three mentees at a time

      3. Guide representatives in legislation writing and idea development

      4. Aid students in completing objectives required by Tigers LEAD

  3. Automatic Enrollment of Representatives in Tigers LEAD

    1. Would enhance the representative experience and aid them in becoming better leaders in the Mizzou community.

    2. Large increase in the number of students enrolled in the program will provide an opportunity to determine how it can be better tailored to students.

    3. Annual survey will be sent to all participants, starting this semester, to find out what changes ought to be made to the program to make it more meaningful.

  4. Create New Opportunities for Students to Lead by Creating Deputy Positions

    1. Deputy Vice-President, Deputy Outreach Coordinator, Deputy Sustainability Coordinator, Deputy Marketing Coordinator, Deputy Student Issues Coordinator (see: Engage platform), and Deputy Secretary positions will be formed.

    2. Would allow students interested in serving on the cabinet to gain valuable experience while also providing assistance to the sitting cabinet.

    3. Positions would be available during the spring semester only.

    4. Will be selected by the cabinet member for whom the deputy would work.

    5. The Executive Cabinet and all deputies will meet once-per-month in place of the traditional cabinet meeting to encourage communication.

ENGAGE

Making campus safer, healthier and more inclusive

  1. Creation of a Student Issues Coordinator cabinet position

    1. Will focus on starting discussions about and finding solutions for complex problems facing students that cannot be easily resolved by the President, the RHA Congress or otherwise

    2. Relevant issues that would be addressed by the Student Issues Coordinator:

      1. Graduating on Time

        1. A spring-summer 2015 project; will work with Residential Life and Peer Advisors to add the creation of a four-year plan to the FIG curriculum.

          1. Outcome: Keeps tuition costs and student fees down

      2. Mental Health

        1. Will work with the Outreach/Marketing Coordinators to raise awareness about resources currently available to new students seeking help.

        2. Will work in conjunction with other willing parties to lobby administrators for the addition of a mental health first aid* provider on Mizzou’s campus.

      3. Social Justice

        1. Will schedule regular meetings with leaders of the Four Front Minority Student Leaders Council and the Triangle Coalition to discuss ways that RHA can contribute to promoting One Mizzou.

  2. Promoting Safety & Inclusivity within Our Student Leaders

    1. New requirement for the RHA Executive Cabinet and all Hall Government Executive Boards to receive Green Dot Training and to participate in a presentation by the Diversity Peer Educators no later than October 1 every fall semester.

      1. By promoting safety and inclusivity in a greater number of our student leaders we’re helping expand the impact and reach of these on-campus services.

  3. Work with the Women’s Center to Introduce the Language Partners Program to the Residence Halls

    1. Instead of being paired randomly, international students would be placed with a Language Partner living in their residence hall. This will promote a greater sense of community and inclusion of international students.

    2. Students will be made aware of the service during Summer Welcome and encouraged to volunteer.

  4. Link international students with other students from their region/culture

    1. The transition to Mizzou can be difficult for the 2,879 international students who are currently seeking a degree from this institution

    2. Connecting these students, who are experiencing similar changes, will empower them by letting them know that they are not alone and by providing them with a support group who knows what they’re going through and is likely experiencing it themselves.

ADVOCATE

Extending the student voice beyond the residence halls

  1. Work with Campus Dining Services (CDS) to design a new pricing mechanism to make eating on-campus more affordable

    1. While the current pricing structure may be reasonable in all-you-can-eat facilities, purchases made at places like Sabai, Baja and Emporium can be of poor value.

    2. Prices for packaged goods (fruit, vegetables, snacks) should be comparable to what students would pay by visiting the grocery store

  2. Oversee the Beginning of a Residential Bike Share Pilot Program

    1. Will help us determine how to best implement Bike Share in the residence hall setting

    2. Part of a long-term goal of making Bike Share more readily accessible to all students living in a residence hall

  3. Improve and Expand Our Recycling Bin Initiative

    1. In the short-term, this means subsidizing the kinds of events already taking place around campus. In HawLeWood, for example, students are being encouraged to make their own recycling bins and fliers to promote sustainable practices.

    2. Over the next two years, this means providing permanent recycling bins in the room of every residence hall.

    3. By phasing in the recycling bins, the cost burden will be spread out.

  4. Work with the Missouri Students Association (MSA) to provide students with valuable information about the classes available for them to take

    1. Full list of commonly overlooked courses, developed by the MSA Academic Affairs Committee, will be distributed to Peer Advisors during their summer training

    2. List will be individualized for FIG students based upon their major(s), minor(s), and interests as observed by their PA.

    3. List will be distributed to FIG students before enrollment for the spring semester begins.

REFINE

Increasing productivity, efficiency and dedication

  1. Combine Responsibilities of the Vice-President and Finance Coordinator

    1. Would provide additional responsibilities to the Vice-President more appropriate to the stipend received by that position and would make decision-making more efficient

      1. Vice-President will be tasked with proposing the fall and spring semester budgets, and with managing the organization’s funding requests for both the Executive and Legislative Branches.

      2. Management of the organization’s Item Checkout service, also under the umbrella of the Finance Coordinator, will be delegated to the Outreach Coordinator as an additional avenue to connect with Hall Governments putting on events.

  2. Provide a Full-Housing Stipend for the Speaker of Congress

    1. Would provide compensation equal to the workload required by that position

    2. Stipend would be identical to that currently received by the President and Vice-President
